Southerly winds are pumping in warm, moist air to the Mid-Atlantic region today. Partly sunny skies along with temperatures in the low 80s are expected this afternoon. A surface low is evident over the Great Lakes Region. The cold front is draped across the Midwest.  It will make it's way into the Ohio Valley tonight, and into the Mid-Atlantic tomorrow. With mild temperatures this afternoon, the approaching cold front will lift the warm air mass, creating an unstable atmosphere today and tomorrow. SPC has placed us under a Slight Risk for this afternoon and tonight.

Storms will have the potential to bring heavy downpours, strong winds, and large hail. With that said, a delay in evening sports can be anticipated. I think after 4PM we'll start to see things fire up.

Storms will contine into Saturday, and Sunday will be breezy, cool, but good news..more sunshine! Cooler air will kick off the next work week with high temperatures in the upper 50s, and lows in the mid 30s. We're seeing partly sunny skies today. I'm downgrading our likelihood of thunderstorms today. High pressure will briefly build today and into Friday before a strong cold front moves late Friday night. A brief warming trend is in the works however. Today temperatures will reach the mid 70s. Tonight, partly cloudy skies with lows in the 50s.

Unsettled weather moves in once again tomorrow evening. With temperatures climbing near 80 tomorrow, instability, along with enough Storm Relative Helicity to produce strong storms. These will occur out ahead of the front tomorrow evening. Saturday, additional storms are expected as the front passes Washignton County, moving towards the Eastern Seaboard.

The sun is trying to peak out today, much earlier than what I expected. The center of the upper level low is expected to be in Northern Pennsylvannia by tomorrow morning. Scattered showers this afternoon however are still not ruled out, and again this evening.

I think tomorrow will be similar, with peaks of sun and a scattered shower. Temperatures however, will warm this afternoon and into Friday. Temperatures should reach the mid 70s Thursday, and near 80 on Friday before a cold front moves through the Mid-Atlantic Friday night.

Temperatures will be above average ending the work week, providing instability for thunderstorms to fire up out ahead of the front. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC)  has placed us in a slight risk for severe weather Friday. Strong winds will pose the main threat.  The cold front is expected to be East of our region by Saturday. Therefore, Saturday should be partly cloudy as the front exits the region, and Sunday should bring more sunshine with breezy conditions. It will be cooler by the end of the weekend. Normal high temperatures for early May are usually near 70. Temperatures should be in the low 60s on Sunday, with lows cooling into the 30s! Rain showers will continue to effect the forecasted region today. The surface low is located over Southern Virginia, moving Northeast. Flood advisories, watches, and warnings are imminent until midnight. I'd expect these advisories to expand North and East into Washington County this afternoon.

The slow moving low pressure system will make it's way over Maryland tomorrow. I'm expecting heavy rain to impact us. High pressure will move in Thursday into Friday, before a cold front makes it's way to our area Friday evening. A few thunderstorms can be expected out ahead of the frontal passage. An upper level disturbance over the Tennessee Valley, in addition to a surface low is moving up the Eastern Shore today. The cyclonic flow is wrapping around, bringing on shore flow to the Mid-Atlantic. High pressure has moved offshore of the New England region. Both are responsible for bringing Easterly winds and rain showers to Washington County. Anywhere between 1/4-1/2 an inch of rain can be expected today.

The umbrella will be handy for the next few days before the system exits our region. Over the weekened, we'll see temperatures climb into the upper 70s. We could hit 80 by Friday as a warm front is expected to be approach the Mid-Atlanic. Showers are expected for Saturday, and by Mother's Day, a cold front will move through the region. Temperatures will return to the 60s by next Monday. A deep trough will become a closed off low over the Midwest today. Snow and heavy rain continues for the Midwest. Expect flight delays.

While over the Mid-Atlantic.....High pressure continues to act as a blocker. This area of high pressure will remain stagnant into the weekend. Low dew points and light winds, means a great weekend is in store! Expect high temperatures in the upper 60s-about normal for early May.

The fair weather pattern will come to a halt next week as an area of low pressure moves over the Carolina coast and heads North. With that said, a few more clouds are expected Monday, with the potential for showers late Monday night and into Tuesday. In the Mid-Atlantic Region, we have the same set up today. High pressure is building, and a deep trough still persists across the Western CONUS. Plenty of sunshine will continue the rest of the day and tonight. A clear sky will bring overnight low temperatures to the 40s. For the weekend, I sound like a broken record here, very nice conditions expected!

Early next week an area of low pressure will progress across the Mississippi Valley and progress towards the Eastern Shore. It's expected to move up the coast line of the Carolinas Tuesday. Can I just say, it's gorgeous outside!? At the surface, high pressure is still persistent over the Canadian Maritimes, which is responsible for the Easterly winds. However, note, skies have cleared.

At the upper levels, a well amplified ridge is over the Eastern CONUS. This is allowing heights to raise, and temperatures to warm. This is also allowing subsidance to occur, which will help prevent any precip and clouds from entering our forecasted region today. A deep trough has developed over the Western CONUS which has aided in the development of showers and SNOW for portions of Colorado and Iowa. Meanwhile, a shortwave  (disturbance) is embedded downstream of the upper level trough. This is helping to ignite rain showers and the development of thundestorms for the Mississippi Valley today. Lots going on across the country today, but fair weather persists for the Mid-Atlantic.

Average high temperature for the 1st of May is 68F in Hagerstown. I certainly think we'll hit that today. It's 65 at 11:32AM and the sun is shining. The surface will warm this afternoon. With that said, I'm increasing the expected high temperature a few degrees today. I think 70-72F is a good range. High pressure will persist over the Canadian Maritimes today bringing Easterly winds to the Mid-Atlantic. The onshore flow continues to bring cloud cover and light drizzle to Washington County today. Tonight, a Northeast wind will enable drier air to move in. With that said, I think we'll see the clouds begin to clear later tonight, which will also help temperatures reach the 40s.

Upper level ridging across the Eastern CONUS will allow some subsidence tomorrow, in addition to warmer temperatures. Therefore expecting mostly sunny skies for Wednesday. With no cloud deck expected, temperatures will easily be able to reach the upper 60s.

Light rain showers will continue on and off today. The rain is certainly needed. So far this month, we've had a whopping 1.93 inches of rain. Compare this to 2012, when we had 3.32 inches. The unsettled pattern will stay with us, atleast until Wednesday. While today however, high pressure offshore is still bringing in moisture to the Mid-Atlantic, and a weak area of low pressure over the Ohio Valley moves East over the Mid-Atlantic.

Diurnal temperatures won't be great today due to cloud cover. The overnight low last night was 51, and temperature is only at 54 as of 11:30 EDT. Therefore, I don't expect temperatures to increase much in the afternoon hours. Temperatures should reach the low 60s this afternoon. Tonight, clouds will hold, so radiational cooling is ruled out. The clouds will act like a blanket overnight. Therefore, temperatures in the low 50s again is a good possibility.

Light rain and clouds will continue tomorrow before high pressure builds across the Mid-Atlantic for the end of the week. Already looking forward to the weekend?
